Frequently asked questions
Your request
How do I request a proposal?
You have three options: fill in the request form, use the solar calculator or message us on WhatsApp. Only your WhatsApp number is required; everything else (area, type of property, approximate electricity bill, power outages, photos) is optional, but it helps us prepare the conversation. Our team then contacts you on WhatsApp to understand your project and, if you wish, arrange a technical visit. You do not need to create an account.
When will you contact me after my request?
Our team reviews every request and messages you on WhatsApp at the number you provided. We try to reply as soon as possible, usually during business hours, but response times can vary with the number of requests and the season. In this first exchange we talk about your consumption, the power outages you experience and what you expect from the system. Make sure your number includes the country code (for example +1 for the Dominican Republic) so our message reaches you.
Does my request commit me to anything?
No. Sending a request or using the calculator costs nothing and commits you to nothing. A request is not a quote: it is the starting point for us to contact you on WhatsApp and understand your needs. The quote comes after the technical visit, in writing, with details of the equipment and the work. Only you decide whether to accept it. If you change your mind at any point, just tell us on WhatsApp.
Do I need a technical visit?
Yes, to receive a detailed quote. Every home is different: roof orientation and condition, shade, electrical panel, space for batteries, actual consumption. The visit lets us check all of this on site and size the system with real data instead of assumptions. The terms of the technical visit are explained when we contact you on WhatsApp, before an appointment is set. In the meantime, the calculator gives you a first indicative estimate.
What does the quote include?
The quote is provided in writing after the technical visit. It usually details the proposed equipment (panels, inverter, batteries if any, mounting structure and protection devices) with its specifications, the installation and commissioning work, the total price, payment terms, an expected timeline, and the manufacturer and installation warranties. It always states who does the work. Take time to read it and ask us about anything unclear; our guide to reading a quote can help.
Solutions
What is the difference between backup, hybrid, off-grid and grid-tied systems?
- Backup: inverter and batteries, with or without a few panels, to keep the essentials running during outages.
- Hybrid: panels, hybrid inverter and batteries; the sun powers the house by day, the batteries take over in the evening and during outages, and the grid stays connected.
- Off-grid: the house produces and stores most of its own energy, often with a backup generator.
- Grid-tied without battery: panels and a grid inverter; it reduces the electricity you buy during the day but shuts down during an outage.
More details in our solar systems guide.
Which package should I choose?
It depends on your main goal. To get through outages in an apartment or small shop, look at the Backup package. To lower your bill and stop suffering outages in a house or villa, Hybrid Comfort. For a large villa with air conditioning or a pool aiming for maximum autonomy, Villa Autonomy. For a business that uses most of its power during the day, Grid-tied, no battery. Hotels, restaurants and larger shops need a Business study. Compare the packages; we confirm the choice during the technical visit.
Can I keep my generator?
In most cases, yes. A generator can remain useful as backup, especially for an off-grid villa or after several cloudy days. Some inverters can start it automatically when the batteries run low, if the generator supports it. During the technical visit we check its condition, its power rating and how to connect it safely. Connecting a generator to a solar system must always be done by a qualified professional, never improvised.
Can solar power run air conditioning and a pool?
Yes, it is possible, but these are the loads that weigh most in system sizing. Air conditioning running at night needs enough battery capacity; a pool pump can be scheduled during the day to use solar production directly. Inverter-type air conditioners generally use less power than older models. That is why, during the technical visit, we list your appliances and when you use them. For a villa with several AC units and a pool, the Villa Autonomy or Hybrid Comfort packages are the usual starting points.
Prices and savings
How much does a solar installation cost?
The price is set on quote, after the technical visit. It depends on your consumption, your goal (backup, savings or autonomy), the amount of battery storage, the type of roof, access and the equipment chosen. That is why we do not publish any price until it has been validated for your specific case: a generic price would be misleading. The solar calculator gives you a first indicative estimate to help you get your bearings, but it is not a quote. The detailed quote is provided in writing after the visit.
Do you offer financing?
We do not promise any financing offer. On the form you can indicate that you are interested in financing: we take note of it and discuss it with you when we contact you on WhatsApp. If a suitable option exists for your project, it will be presented to you in writing with all its terms, so you can make an informed decision. You can also ask your bank about loans for home improvements or renewable energy equipment.
How much will I save, and how long until the system pays for itself?
No one can say for certain in advance. Savings depend on your consumption and schedule, the rate you pay, actual production (orientation, shade, weather), the share of energy you use directly and, if you have a generator, the fuel you no longer burn. The calculator gives an indicative estimate of savings and payback; the method is explained in how we calculate. We explain the assumptions used so you can check them.
Technical
What is the difference between kWp and kWh?
kWp (kilowatt-peak) measures the maximum power of the panels under standard test conditions: it tells you the size of the system. kWh (kilowatt-hour) measures an amount of energy: it is the unit used on your electricity bill, for solar production over a day or a year, and for a battery's capacity. The inverter is rated in kW: the power it can deliver at any given moment. A system is sized using all three figures.
Do solar panels work during a power outage?
It depends on the system. A grid-tied system without batteries generally shuts down during an outage: for safety, the inverter stops so that it does not send power into the grid while technicians are working on it. With a hybrid or off-grid system with batteries, yes: the house stays powered within the limits of the battery capacity and the inverter's power, and the panels recharge the batteries during the day. You usually choose the priority circuits that stay backed up.
Which batteries are used and how long do they last?
Lithium batteries are often used today, and lead-acid batteries in some cases. Their lifespan depends on the technology, the number of charge and discharge cycles, the depth of discharge and the temperature where they are installed. That is why we do not announce a fixed lifespan: the quote shows the manufacturer's specifications and the applicable warranties. A ventilated, shaded location protected from humidity helps preserve them. Learn more in the battery guide.
Can solar panels withstand hurricanes?
It depends mainly on the mounting structure, the fixings, the condition of the roof and the quality of the installation, more than on the panel itself. No system can offer an absolute guarantee against a strong hurricane. During the visit we inspect the roof and the possible anchoring; ask for the quote to specify the materials and the wind resistance declared by the manufacturer. Near the sea, salt air also calls for corrosion-resistant materials and connections. See the hurricanes and salt air guide.
Is my roof suitable? What about shade?
Many roofs are suitable: concrete slab, metal sheet or tiles, as long as they are in good condition and can bear the weight and the fixings. If the roof is not suitable, a pergola, carport or ground mount is sometimes possible. Shade from palm trees, other trees or nearby buildings reduces production, sometimes significantly, even when it covers only part of the panels. During the technical visit we assess orientation, tilt and shade throughout the day to place the panels in the right spot.
How long does installation take?
It depends on the size of the system, equipment availability, roof access and the weather. For a home, on-site work is usually counted in days rather than weeks; a large or commercial project may take longer. The quote includes an expected timeline, confirmed on acceptance depending on equipment availability. At the end, the system is commissioned and tested with you, and we explain how it works and how it is followed up.
Can I feed my surplus into the grid (net metering)?
In the Dominican Republic there is a net metering program (medición neta) that, under certain conditions, allows the energy you feed into the grid to be taken into account on your bill. The conditions, procedures and required meter must be checked with the distribution company (EDENorte for Samaná province) and the sector authorities (SIE, CNE), in the current version of the rules. We do not promise eligibility. We explain it in the net metering guide.
Maintenance
What maintenance does a solar system need?
Little, but regular. Panels produce less when dust, salt, leaves or bird droppings build up; how often they need cleaning depends on the location and is often more frequent near the sea. Fixings, corrosion, connections, the inverter and the batteries should also be checked periodically. Cleaning is generally done with fresh water and a soft brush, without abrasive products or a pressure washer, following the manufacturer's recommendations. Roof work and any electrical intervention are jobs for a professional. See maintenance and repair.
Can you work on a system installed by another company?
Yes. We inspect existing systems even if they were installed by another company or by an installer who is no longer available: falling production, inverter alarms, batteries that no longer last, outages the system does not cover. You can send us photos on WhatsApp of the inverter screen, the panels and any documents you have. A technician then carries out an on-site diagnosis and we propose a repair or an upgrade. Do not try to open the inverter or handle cables or batteries: it is dangerous.
Can I add batteries or expand my system?
Often yes, but it depends on the compatibility of your existing equipment: the inverter must accept more panels or batteries, and new batteries must be compatible with the ones already installed (technology, voltage, management system). Sometimes the inverter has to be replaced or a second system added. A diagnosis of your current system shows what is possible and at what cost, on quote. Learn more on the maintenance, upgrades and diagnostics page.
Personal data
What personal data do you ask for?
Only your WhatsApp number is required, so that we can contact you. Everything else is optional: name, area, type of property, approximate consumption or bill, photos. We use this data to answer your request and prepare your project. We only send you marketing offers if you agree, and you can withdraw that consent at any time. Full details are in our privacy policy.
What happens to my photos?
The photos you send us (roof, electrical panel, meter, bill, inverter) are used only to prepare your project or your diagnosis. They remain private: they are not published on the website or on social media. They are shared with a partner installer only with your consent. If we ever show a completed installation, it will be a real one, shown with the client's agreement. You can ask us to delete your photos from the data rights page.
Do you share or sell my data?
We do not sell your data. Your request is received by our team; it is passed on to a partner installer only with your consent, for example if they are to carry out the visit or the work. We do not send you advertising without your consent. At any time you can ask to access, correct or delete your data, and withdraw your consent, from the data rights page.
About us
Who is behind Terrenas Solar?
Terrenas Solar is a website of THERD SRL (RNC 133-63250-2), a Dominican company. THERD SRL runs a network of local websites in Las Terrenas, such as rentlasterrenas.com (vehicle rentals), casaterrenas.com (long-term rentals) and proterrenas.com (tradespeople and maintenance), as well as the THERD real estate agency.
